BMD (Bone Mineral Density)
One of the best ways to determine if your body is losing bone mass is with a bone mineral density test. If your bone density is found to be low, you and your doctor can work together on a treatment plan to help prevent fractures before they occur. We use ultrasound to detect the risk of osteoporosis by measuring for the bone mineral density of your Mid Tibia. The Mid Tibia is measured because its bone is similar to that found in the Whole Body, where fractures occur most often. Bone mineral density is a powerful predictor of skeletal strength and fracture risk, especially when considered along with other factors such as gender, age, and family history.
The objective of a bone density scan is to identify your risk for bone loss and therefore your risk for future bone fracture. If your osteoporosis risk screening finds you are at mild/moderate or high risk, your physician may recommend dietary and lifestyle changes, schedule a BMD Test, or even prescribe a drug therapy to increase your bone density.

Bone Mineral Density:
BMD, a measure of bone density, reflecting the strength of bones as represented by calcium content. The BMD test detects osteopenia (mild bone loss, usually without symptoms) and osteoporosis (more severe bone loss, which may cause symptoms). Bone mass density (BMD): A measure of bone density. Loss of bone mass is due to osteopenia or, if more severe, to osteoporosis.
What is Osteopenia?
Osteopenia is a bone condition characterized by a decreased density of bone, which leads to bone weakening and an increased risk of breaking a bone (fracture).
Osteomalacia, Osteomyelitis, and osteoarthritis are different conditions that are frequently confused with osteopenia because they sound similar. Osteomalacia is a disorder of the mineralization of newly formed bone, which causes the bone to be weak and more prone to fracture. There are many causes of osteomalacia, including vitamin D deficiency and low blood phosphate levels. Osteomyelitis is bone infection. Osteoarthritis is joint inflammation featuring cartilage loss and is the most common type of arthritis. Osteoarthritis does not cause
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by a decrease in the density of bone, decreasing its strength and resulting in fragile bones. Osteoporosis literally leads to abnormally porous bone that is compressible, like a sponge. This disorder of the skeleton weakens the bone and results in frequent fractures (breaks) in the bones. Osteopenia, by definition, is a condition of bone that is slightly less dense than normal bone but not to the degree of bone in osteoporosis.
Normal bone is composed of protein, collagen, and calcium, all of which give bone its strength. Bones that are affected by osteoporosis can break (fracture) with relatively minor injury that normally would not cause a bone to fracture. The fracture can be either in the form of cracking (as in a hip fracture) or collapsing (as in a compression fracture of the vertebrae of the spine). The spine, hips, ribs, and wrists are common areas of bone fractures from osteoporosis although osteoporosis-related fractures can occur in almost any skeletal bone.
Osteopenia vs. Osteoporosis
It is important to note that while Osteopenia is considered a lesser degree of bone loss than osteoporosis, it nevertheless can be of concern when it is associated with other risk factors (such as smoking, cortisone steroid usage, rheumatoid arthritis, family history of osteoporosis, etc.) that can increase the chances for developing vertebral, hip, and other fractures. In this setting, Osteopenia may require medication as part of the treatment program.
